Excsional Biopsy Results

After a fine needle biopsy on two sites, results from one came back with atypical cells.  Had excisional biopsy wih needle locatization to remove both cysts and below are the findings:

First site:  fibrocystic change, profiferative type with sclerosing adenosis and extensive stromal fibrosis associated with microcalcifications, duct extasia.

Second site:  Atypical lobular Hyperplasia, focal, cellular fibroadenoma, fibrocysitc change, proliferative type with sclerosing adenosis associated with microcalcifications, duct extasia.

I have many cysts in left breast and also had a fibroadenoma removed last year from right breast, that was completly benign.   I am 51, still menstruating and the only bc is an aunt who was diagnosed in her late 70's and is now in her late 80's.  I do not know what kind of bc she had.   My surgeon suggested I see a medical oncologist to discussion prevention.   would like your opinon on the above results and how much more of a risk am i to develop bc.

Thank you for your time.

Dear HelenV,   Atypical lobular hyperplasia is a marker of moderately increased risk of cancer to both breasts (4-5x’s relative risk).   A finding of atypical lobular hyperplasia in a fine needle biopsy would prompt consideration of an excisional biopsy as you have had done.   Having a discussion with a medical oncologist to discuss risk in your particular situation is a reasonable recommendation.  They will discuss these findings in context of risks and benefits of any prevention strategy to your individual situation.
