Fat Necrosis

by dogwalkinfool, Aug 24, 2007 08:33PM
In 2002, I had a mastectomy and tram flap breast reconstruction surgery.  In a couple of years, a couple of lumps appeared at the top of the reconstructed breast.  Those lumps were diagnosed as fat necrosis from the surgery.

One of the lumps became noticeable when I wore t-shirts, sweaters, etc.  In July of this year, after my mammogram,  I asked the radiologist what I might be able to do to get rid of the lump.  He said he felt he could remove it by aspirating it.

I had this done about 3 weeks ago.  The procedure went well.  I watched (via ultrasound) him aspirate the lump that was noticeable, as well as another lump.  The fat necrosis looked like, and had the consistency of egg whites, which he said was good, because no blood was present.  My question is this:

The lump is back, but still not noticeable with a t-shirt, etc.  Should I make the radiologist aware of this?

My gynecologist (while seeing him about a uterine polyp) said I should see a breast surgeon and have the "lump" removed.  I do not want to go through that, as I feel surgery is what caused the fat necrosis in the first place.

What do you believe I should do?

Thanking you in advance for your response,

I would see the surgeon and discuss the options.  It is obvious that the aspiration didn't work ( I am surprised the radiologist did the aspiration).  Perhaps the surgeon can settle your concerns that more surgery would make it worse?

In the final analysis...it is your decision...but you need to make an informed decision based on the facts and not what you feel.
