Fibroadenoma & core biopsies

Fibroadenoma & core biopsies

I need medical guidance please. I'm 28. I had several ultrasounds and exams and the doctors who saw me and the technicians who did the ultrasounds found one lump in each breast similar in sizes (approx 2 x 2.2x 1.3 cm) but diffirent in locations. They all think they are typical fibroadenomas. The last breast Specialst i saw said he is 99% sure they are fibroadenomas. I'm having a core biopsy scheduled for tomorrow. From your experience, if the doctors exams' and ultrasounds recommend they are fibroadenomas, what are the chances that it would turn to be something else in the biopsy? And if turns to be something else, what possibly would it be? I'm really concerned and not sure how I'll be able to wait until i get the biopsy results. Those will be the longest 15 days of my life.

Dear brenda02,  Fibroadenomas are non-malignant (benign) lumps that feel smooth, and round. They can vary from very small to quite large (5cm). Fibroadenomas are usually distinct on a mammogram and ultrasound. They are most common in women in their teens and early 20's but can happen at any age. If the size is stable and the fibroadenoma is not bothering the woman - there may be no reason to remove it.   Although most physicians feel fairly confident with the diagnosis of fibroadenoma, the only way to be absolutely certain is to biopsy.

Brenda - Most lumps end up to be benign.  I've had 7 fibroadenomas removed either surgically or by core biopsy and all turned out benign and in each case, the doctor (s) were pretty sure and reassured me.  Unfortunately the 8th lump was cancer and there was not one doctor who would reassure me, in fact, they wouldn't even look me in the eye. So, most experienced doctors who deal with this have a pretty good idea.   I did very well though as it was 3-1/2 years ago and I feel fine.  I really can't believe they are making you wait two weeks for results - where are they sending it to Alaska??  The most I waited was 48 hours.  Tell them how concerned you are and ask if you could get the results sooner.  They probably will have them but may be making you wait for another office follow-up - NOT FAIR.
Good luck and keep us posted.  I'm glad you are following through
