Fibroadenoma or Phyllodes - Less Invasive Mass Removal

I recently had a biopsy where the doctor inserted a needle into my left breat to diagnose a 2 inch round mass.  When the test came back my doc told me it could either be a fibroadinoma or phyllodes but the test didn't say for certian which one.  Now I have an appt next week to have surgery to remove the mass.  I am very concerned about haveing a 3 inch scar on my breast.  Is there no way for my doc to find out if its cancerous or not with out taking the whole mass out and disecting it?  What about that new procedure called cryoablation?  Can that be used if it is phyllodes?  I'm trying to do everything I can to find out what I can do besides having this 3 inch surgical cut.  Thank you.

I am sure that dealing with the uncertainty of your diagnosis is causing you great concern.  However, as the needle biopsy was inconclusive, the appropriate action is for a surgical biopsy.  The doctor will remove a section of the mass and have it sent for pathological exam.  If it is indeed a fibroadenoma, it may not be necessary to remove the mass unless it becomes larger and causes pain.  If it is determined to be a phyllodes tumor   it will indeed need to be completely removed to obtain clear margins.  Then, hopefully, no cancer cells will remain behind to cause increased spread and potential metastasis to other parts of your body.
Facing a lumpectomy or partial/complete mastectomy (and this can only be determined by your surgeon and the pathology results) is quite scary.  The end result is that you save your life and a three inch surgical cut may not seem so important after all. Post surgical reconstruction or other form of plastic surgery are always an option.  Please do not take any chances with your life --- a malignancy is not something to treat mildly in order to preserve your breast appearance.  I wish you the best and hope your results are successful.
