Fine needle aspiration

Fine needle aspiration

I read that Dr. Armando Guiliano did a research on Fine Needle Aspiration, and that the research resulted in the fact that it was not the benign procedure that has been touted.  That if the lump is cancerous that the FNA can create tracks that will spread the cancer.  Does anyone have any information about this research?

Hi.

This news has caused up some stir for a while, but the answer regarding the validity of his claim should just be based on simple common sense and epidemiological data.  Though there is a theoretical risk indeed that the needle can create tracks, this has not been shown to really lead to cancer spread (based on epidemiological studies).  Moreover, if the tumor is not touched and it is in fact cancer, then treatment cannot be instituted and this would just also lead to cancer spread (and this is a much surer thing compared to Guiliano's claims).

So the standard of care is still to do needle biopsies for suspicious tumors to see if this is cancer or not.

Regards and God bless.
