Focal Asymmentry

Focal Asymmentry

Hello, I am 52 years old and have been having pain in my left breast.  The pain sometimes radiates from the areola into the center of my breast.  My breast is tender sometimes.  I had mammogram done 10/7/2010.  I had a hysterectomy about 5 years ago and I have not been on any hormone therapy.  I found out I have a focal asymmentry in the left breast from reading my previous xrays myself, no one told of this.  I have family history of breast cancer: (mother 13 year cancer survivor, aunt.  My aunt also had ovarian cancer but she passed away from the breast cancer)  my grandmother had cyst removed from breast.  Should I request a biopsy?

The mammogram report should mention a BI-RADS Category. Included with this is a recommendation, based on the category, such as "short-term  followup recommended" or "biopsy recommended."    Once you receive the report, and discuss it with your doctor if you have any questions, you can decide if you feel comfortable with the recommended plan.

Although you would not automatically be considered high risk, with a hx of breast cancer in just one first-degree relative, due to also having an  aunt who had both ovarian and breast cancer, you might  want to discuss with you doctor whether testing for BRCA 1 and 2 mutations might be a consideration. (Did you mother have that genetic testing?)

Please update us  regarding what you hear back  from your  recent mammo, by adding another post to this same thread.

Best wishes...
