Going to the breast clinic for US/multiple L nodes enlarged

I am a vag cancer survivor (1998) had chemo rad and surgery. Stage 1. Been good so far.

I have rheum arthritis *34 yrs* and all the overlapping diseases that come with r/a...have lung issues ILD, and liver issues.

I had a ct scan done to make sure a solitary lung nodule was still remaining stable. Found it in 2013 and its been stable even with this scan BUT a new problem showed that I have multiple enlarged axillary lymph nodes Left breast...largest at short axis was 12 mm or 1.2 cm. The report said it had grown since 2014..but none of the copies I had from 2014 mentioned any enlarging lymph nodes. The tech couldnt get a true result since my ct was without contrast. The pulm faxed the report to my pcp and he checked the area involved (let me leave my t shirt on..I asked if he wanted it off but he said he could feel thru it). He lingered on one area...but then said he didnt feel anything that made him go..whoa...we need to get that seen to..asap.! He mentioned not feeling much that concerned him.

The axillary node is painless..ugh.. ...there are multiple....more ugh. and unilateral..ugh ugh

I was worried about lymphoma but he said that is more diffuse. He is more worried about the word Multiple. I wonder how many is multiple??? Not noted.

He said he is sending me to get an US....and mammo digital/diagnosic. I have my mammos every yr..last one being July 22 this yr. Though they noted I have dense breasts.

Thursday morning I have my appt and they will give me the results right away.

I am 66 and 5'3" 124 lbs.

anyone have multiple, one sided painless enlarged lymph nodes? Oh and I worry that its increased also. I do remember having a lymph node under my right armpit 2 yrs ago and I could feel it but it went away after awhile.

Any advice? what would a differentail diagnosis be for the above? Labs are normal.

Thank you!

Hi,
When there is infection or inflammation somewhere in the body, lymph nodes may enlarge but it doesn't necessarily mean it's something serious. Swelling might occur even if the infection/inflammation is trivial or not apparent.
It could be all sorts of things causing the nodes swelling, especially if you have “Immune System disorder” such as Lupus or Rheumatoid arthritis which is a chronic inflammatory disease.
I don't think you have reasons to worry for now, but I am sure that your upcoming Mammogram and Ultrasound will clarify things for you. Since you had breast cancer in the past, it’s important to have these tests done and perhaps a MRI or a  biopsy (If needed) to definitely rule out cancer.
I wish you well and I hope there is nothing there to worry about.
Take care and good luck.

I had breast augmentation in 2002....getting rid of some tissue.  Too heavy for me.  she asked if I had implants ever?  I said NO.   One tech told me that the digital mammo only does breast tissue and not armpit.  Really, because I always feel like a contortionist trying to get part of the armpit in the machine.  How did you know I have 2 cats?  ha...  but they don'y have claws.  though I am cleaning the litter box every 30 mins.    Thank you so much for your help.  I am clueless about this.  sending hugs....  will keep you updated on my adventure.

You are welcome.
I am sorry that I misunderstood that you had breast cancer in the past. Since you had a Mammogram about 3 months ago and it was normal, I really wouldn’t worry too much about breast cancer.
The Ultrasound test cannot tell if a lymph node is cancerous. It can only tell if the node looks suspicious and if it does, a biopsy is warranted to obtain a correct diagnosis.
If your Doctor does not recommend a biopsy at this time, sometimes it's necessary to biopsy a lymph node just for peace of mind.
One other point I would like to make is that armpit nodes are very common. This is because cuts and scrapes on the hand or arms (common in cat lovers) can lead to swollen lymph nodes in these areas.
I agree with your Doctor that if you have Autoimmune Disorder, lymph node could also swell.
Please let us know what your Doctor advises you to do.
Take care now and lets hope that everything will turn out just fine for you.

Thank you...I have had vaginal cancer in the past..not breast cancer.
BUT TODAY:
Just had my L breast ultrasound today.  I had a digital mammo done on 7-22-15 and it was normal. A ct scan I had done for another problem showed that there was enlarged nodes in the left axillary increased in size since last CT in 2014. It was not noted in my results at that time.

I didnt have a mammo since the tech thought it not necessary.  The tech took me into the room she could feel the node in my armpit.  I could never find it. I dont think my pcp could find it.  They did the scan and told me the largest node was 2.5 cm (that worries me..since its painless...and unilateral.).  I was surprised it was that large.  there are other enlarged nodes but very small.  they are sending the info to my pcp and he will decide if I should have a node bx.  (which i am sure he will).

I am 66 and had stage 1 vag cancer in 1998 with surgery, radiation (int and ext) and chemo..  so I worry.

I also have autoimmune disease...rheum arth since 1984, sjogrens, scleroderma, raynauds, sle, mctd,...etc.  I asked if nodes can get that large with my autoimmune issues and she said yes, they can.   I dont think there is any breast cancer that runs in my family.

My cbc 's have been good...mammos have all been good every yr.

Can an breast ultrasound show cancer?   Would the techs know if this was cancerous just by the US?  I have a call into my pcp..

any help would be appreciated.  I was surprised to learn it was 2.5 cm...
