HER 2

Woul d like to know the significance of the HER 2 results In pathology reports.  I was HER2 - Positive 2+ and also oestrogen and progesterone positive.  I am on Tamoxifen and Herceptin was never mentioned, yet I have read various comments that HER positive tumours need Herceptin - could you please clear this up.  My tumour  a 5mm invasive stage 1 with associated DCIS which was intermediate.  Clear margins.  Many thanks.

I am ER and PR positive but Her 2 negative.  However the initial pathology result had my Her2 status at 2+, which is middle of the road.  Because of this the test was also done at an alternative hospital and got a reading of 1+ (which is negative).  The most accurate test is called a FISH test but it is only done in a number of hospitals.  It does take a little time, but you get a definite and accurate answer.  The result of the FISH test for me was negative.  I suggest that you ask your doctor for a definite negative or positive Her2 result and if you happen to be positive, then yes you most definitely should be asking your doctor about Herceptin.

Good luck.

Thanks for your reply -  I have heard of the FISH test but have been told by the Dr. not to worry about HER status.  Does leave me with niggling worries everytime I hear people say that HER positive requires Herceptin.  Will ask again when next due for a follow-up appointment.
