HRT for me if my mom has breast cancer?

HRT for me if my mom has breast cancer?

Hi, my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer at age 65.  She had genetic testing and does not have the BRCA1 gene.  I don't remember if they tested her for the BRCA2.  My question is this....

I'm 52 and 2 years into menopause.  I've had yearly mammo's since age 35.  The last one showed a strange increase in a cyst that had been on previous films.  The doctor aspirated bloody fluid from the cyst.  The test results were negative and a follow up ultrasound 2 months later showed no further increase in the cyst.

By coincidence, earlier that day the NP in my gyn's office prescribed the lowest dose of prempro which I haven't started taking yet.

I have osteopenia and the normal menopause problems.....the NP thought HRT would be a good choice to reduce bone loss.

What is your opinion of HRT for someone in my situation?

Dear dai3symae:  In general, the consensus is that if HRT is needed (and that can be subjective) then it should be used at the lowest dose for the shortest duration.  There are a variety of options to deal with many of the symptoms of menopause and you might discuss with your doctor the pros and cons of these as well as HRT in your case.
