Help understanding Breast Ultrasound report

Hi everyone,
I posted a couple of days ago while waiting for my results of my ultrasound.  Through a lot a hard-work, I finally got the report sent to my PCP.  Can someone help me decipher this thing?  LOL

The findings were:
"Targeted sonography was performed of the palpable area of the right breast at 12 o'clock that was diagramed on the requision for this study.

These demnstrate at 12 o'clock, 4cm from the nipple, a supercicial ovoid homogeneously echogenic well circumscribed nodule contiguous with the deep layer of the skin measuring 16 x 8 x 6mm.

A second similar lesion is located at 12 o'clock, 6cm from the nipple, also contiguous with the deep surface of the skin measuring 24 x 13 x 8mm.

These two similar appearing homogeneous echogenic well-circumscribed solid nodules have a probably benign appearance and may represent lipomas.

Therefore, only continued clinical evaluation and 6-month follow-up sonography could be considered to document stability.

Impression:
1.  The palpable area at the 12 o'clock position of the right breast corresponds to two similar appearing ovoid uniformly echogenic well-circumscribed nodules that have a probably benign appearance and may represent lipomas.
2.  Therefore, continued clinical evaluation and 6-month follow up sonography could be considered to assess for stability.

BIRADS category 3:  Probably benign finding - short interval follow-up suggested."

As a note, I was scheduled for a mammo on the same day but it got deferred because I missed my period.

I would've asked my PCP these questions, but she didn't schedule a consult with me; just faxed me the report and told the clerk to tell me that the report was good news, results were benign but I need a mammo as soon as i can fit it into my schedule.  I was disappointed she didn't want to have a face-to-face consult so I took my report to my Nurse Midwife.  She reviewed and suggested a mammo.  If my result is still inconclusive, we will move on to consult with a surgeon for biopsy.  She said that there really is no definite way to tell whether or not the nodules are benign unless we do a biopsy.

Can you guys help to decipher what the report says and your thoughts on what I should do?  I don't know if I should be worried or not - getting conflicting info and I can't use my report as a reference for decision-making cause I don't understand it.

Thanks again everyone!

I requested to have procedure done on both breasts but my order was not written that way.  My ultra sound was one only on the right breast and within a 3" radius from my first palpable lump.  When my PCP examined me prior to writing my order for mammo and ultrasound, there was only 1 palpable lump.

Hi,

BI-RADS 3, as the report stated, means that based on the radiologist's training and experience, the nodules appear to be lipomas  (which are benign), and could be followed up in the short term, to see if there are any changes. Since you apparently have never had a mammogram, that would certainly be a reasonable next step.

Some people are comfortable following the  recommendation for short-term followup, while others cannot stand the uncertainty and prefer to proceed to a biopsy, which as your nurse midwife told you, if the only way to be completely sure.

Whatever you decide, please keep us updated by adding an additional post to this thread.

Best wishes...

I would suggest that you do exactly what was recommended; have the 6 month follow-up and have the Mammogram when it is considered safe considering your menstrual period. I see no conflicting information in the report and since the palpable lumps are in the right breast I see no reason to have any filming done on the left. You should certainly do monthly self exams and if there is any change noted contact your PCP for a clinical exam. Regards ....
