How long should I wait before seeing a surgeon?

How long should I wait before seeing a surgeon?

I found a small lump in Sept and waited until my annual exam in Oct and the doc did confirm that I had a small lump.  I was sent to have my annual mamogram (mammogram) and it came back abnormal and was set up to have a breast ultrasound.  This is what the report said ""A targeted ultrasound was performed of the right lower inner quadrant.  There is a small solid hypoechoic lesion at the four o'clock position with associated shadowing.  This measures apx 12 x 7 mm in size.  Part of the margin apprears somewhat irregular.  Malignancy cannot be ruled out and surgical consultation is recommended to consider biopsy. Abnormality, attention needed".  Well, the ultrasound was a month ago and no one from the Veterans Hosp has called me.  So, am I to believe that its not serious and just wait until my annual next Oct?  Or, should I find someone to take this serious?  Any help would be appreciated.  On top of that they also found a very large thyroid nodule that wasn't there three months ago.. I will be having an ultrasound biopsy on that in the next 3 weeks.  So, what does the ultrasound report mean?  serious or just wait until my next annual?

Dear Feismom:  You need to schedule an appointment with a breast surgeon.  This lump needs to be evaluated further.  Do not wait for someone to call you. Do not wait until your annual exam.  This does not mean it's cancer but it does mean that further evaluation is needed.

Well, I called the Veterans Hospital and got an appt today to see a surgeon.  He said that the "mass" has to removed surgically and he scheduled it for the 30th of this month.  I then go back on the 12th of Feb to get the results of the surgical biopsy... I'm now a total wreck..
