How soon can a complex cyst come back?

by machelle, Aug 22, 2002 12:00AM
Hello,
I am 34 years old and I have had three lumps in my left breast for three years now. For two years they showed ok on mammogram. In Feb 2002, it showed a complex cyst. I had it aspirated in April 2002. They said it was more than likely caffeine related becuase I was a heavy mountain dew drinker.  I am now four and a half months free of caffeine and my left breast is hurting and under my arm. The complex cyst I had removed I never felt in the first place. It is like sharp stabbing pain in my breast and under my are. Do they come back this soon?

Dear Machelle:  Complex cysts describe a structure that is less well defined than a simple cyst with ultrasound. They may contain thick fluid, or fluid that contains dead cells. An aspiration is usually recommended to make sure the cyst is not solid. Any suspicious appearing fluid would be sent to the laboratory for analysis. In general, cysts are benign. Complex cysts require more evaluation to be sure that they are, in fact, cysts.  Often, people will have a cyst, it is aspirated, and then it is gone.  However, some people have recurrent cysts and those people can have frequent recurrences.  It is impossible to tell, from your description, whether this is, in fact a cyst.  We would recommend that you have your doctor take a look.
