I am 27 years old, and have a breast lump.. is it cancer?

Hi,
I am 27 years old, and had a physical checkup 7 months ago, and had no lumps in both breasts. A month ago, during my period i found a lump in my left breast. It is not painful. The doctor told me that it could be because of the period and it should go away a week later and that he can feel another one on the same spot on the right breast. I couldn't feel that one at all. It has been over 3 weeks now and i still have the lump. what do i need to do? do i need to worry that it could be cancer since it is still there even three weeks after the period and that it doesn't hurt? Please advise.

I'd say keep up on it.  if it's still there and worrying you, tell the doctor and have a mammogram.  there's no harm in that.  if you're concerned that it doesn't hurt, that means nothing.  they say, if it hurts, then it's probably not cancer.  so then one might think if it doesn't hurt, maybe it IS.  nonsense.  absolute nonsense.  I had a malignant tumor, and it hurt!  So, keep watching it, get some test done.  the only way to really see it is to have imaging done.  And it is possible to have cancer at 27.  unfortunately.  I was 29.  but i also have a very long family history.

Good luck.  and take deep breaths.  it helps..  ;)

Dear hallina:  Breasts can sometimes feel lumpy and these lumps can increase in size during one's menstrual cycle.  However, if this lump is new, you should have your doctor evaluate it to see if any additional investigation needs to be done.  There is no way, without evaluation, to speculate on what this lump might be.

I got a lump in my right breast also when I was 27. It was diagnosed as  fibroadenomas and benign. I heard that it is not something unusual to young women. To be sure, you will probably need an ultrasound and a biopsy to find out what it is.  If it is benign, you also need to keep track of it by annual mammo and self-examine to make sure it doesn't grow. They won't go away. You will be fine.

I would go and see the doctor to have them look at it, perhaps they will recommend a mammogram or ultrasound to confirm what it is.  It is possible to have cancer at your age so please do not ignore it but don't panic just yet.  Hang in there and get an appointment made.

It's always best to get lumps checked out. Most lumps are not cancerous and your age is in your favor. If no close relatives have had breast cancer it makes you a low risk, also. But you'll feel much better if you hear that from the doctor. They'll probably recommend a mammogram and ultrasound. They might be able to tell from those tests whether it's anything to worry about. If they don't know for sure they'll want to do a biopsy. Biopsies take a day out of your work week, but aren't all that bad. I wish you the best.
