Inconclusive Biopsy

Inconclusive Biopsy

Hello

I found a lump and was sent for an ultrasound.  They were unable to determine what it was so took a fine needle asperation.  I went for the results today to be told they were inconclusive and they wanted to remove the lump.  The consultant said the ultrasound was fine, the radiographer told me she was 99% certain it was nothing serious.  So why such a drastic measure?  I asked if I could try the core biopsy and he agreed with this, but it wasnt something I was offered and I only knew about from the internet.  How often are the results for a core biopsy inconclusive?
I dont want to put myself through surgery if not necessary.  My main worry being I have very small breasts (34AAA!!!)  and worried the removal or even a small lump will make a difference to them.
I am only 29, exercise a lot and eat well so thought that would put me at a low risk anyway?  However my Aunt had breast cancer, does that put me at a much greater risk of it being something?

Thanks for any help u can provide me with

Hi,
Your having the above mentioned fears is perfectly normal. What you need to understand is that there are quite a few cases where the fine needle aspiration results are inconclusive. Though a core biopsy is the next step it is not the best nor most popular one. A physician would prefer to go for an excisional biopsy as that serves the dual purpose of removing the lump en masse and later on planning the treatment according to its being benign or malignant. If the lesion is benign it would still be a mass lesion not normal to your body and hence the suggested approach would be to remove it. If it turns out to be malignant. which seems less likely though, it still has to removed with a further look at adjacent lymph nodes and the other breast for any other lesion.
A family history of breast cancer does in fact put you at a slightly increased risk of breast cancer as compared to the general population.
