Infected Lymph Nodes

by hutch6208, Aug 01, 2003 12:00AM
My friends mother has inflammatory breast cancer.  She just had a double mastectomy done.  The removed 32 lymph nodes and out of the 32, 28 were infected.  They told her that it is not good.  What does this mean?

Thanks,
Vicki

Dear Vicki, They have found cancer in 28 of the tested lymph nodes and there is an increased possibility that cancer cells may go to other parts of the body.  In such a situation chemotherapy is usually recommended as adjuvant treatment (treatment given after surgery to try to prevent or minimize the growth of microscopic deposits of tumor cells that might grow into a recurrent tumor).
