Intraductal Carcinoma In-situ

I was diagnosed with Intraductal Carcinoma In-situ in August of 99.  Had a lumpectomy (no lymphnode removal) and 35 radiation treatments.  I have a follow-up mammogram and visit with my radiologist every six months.

My question:  No one has ever done any blood work on me.  Is the mammogram enough or should they be doing some blood work also?

Dear Chilady:  There is no bloodwork that is a reliable indicator of breast cancer.  Typically, when bloodwork is done as a follow up to cancer it checks blood counts, liver function, and kidney function - all unlikely to indicate a recurrence unless there is damage to these organs. In the case of ductal carcinoma in situ, a mammogram and clinical breast examination is adequate follow up.  Don't forget to do your monthly self-breast examinations as well.
