Intraductal papilloma

by CCatcando, Nov 11, 2008 12:28PM
A few weeks ago I noticed small dirty yellow drops inside my bra and went for a mammogram and ultrasound, I was told a small lump was found and I would need to return for a biopsy. I had a ultrasound guided 12g celero core breast biopsy done and was first told by my gyn that it was a benign ductal papilloma and there was no need to worry about having it removed unless the discharge came back. A few hours later he called back to tell me that after speaking with the pathologist there is a marginal chance that it may not be benign and I need to contact a surgeon to have it removed.  I just obtained a copy of the pathology report to bring to the surgeon.  The clinical diagnosis says Right breast 8 mm complex hypoechoic nodule in 6:00 RA.  The pathologic diagnosis says Core biopsy 8 mm mass, right breast: intraductal papilloma- right breast  AC/car.  I am confused as to why I was first told this was nothing then hours later told there was a marginal chance it may be something.  Can you tell me what AC/car means...I am scared it may mean carcinoma.  I have two weeks to wait until my consult with the surgeon and would also like to know what my recovery expectations should be from the removal of the papilloma if that is all that it is.

Although Ductal Papilloma is a benign breast condition it can be associated with Atypical Hyperplasia which is considered pre-cancerous and does increase the risk of developing an invasive cancer in the future. The Ductal Papilloma is best studied under the microscope after it is removed. The procedure would be similar to an excisional biopsy or lumpectomy and would be done as an outpatient. Recovery time would be minimal with few if any restrictions.
