Intraoperative Ultrasound Localization instead of Wire Localization?

I  have microcalifications and have been told I need a core needle biopsy. I am too panicked and fearful and will not do it. Please don't try to tell me it's not painful, I have read both sides of the story, that is not the issue. The issue is just the thought of it. I don't want to know what's going on, I want general anesthesia. So I have decided to go with a surgical biopsy. However my surgeon stated that they would have to do the wire localization before surgery which wouldn't be much different than the needle biopsy.  I have been reading about the new procedure of Intraoperative Ultrasound which would replace the wire localization while the patient is awake. The Intraoperative Ultrasound in done in Surgery, before the biopsy. The patient is under anesthesia and studies have shown it is successful with non-palpable microcalcifications also. Are any Cancer Centers utilizing this procedure?  I live in Indiana, and will travel.
If this doesn't work , I will just take a wait and see approach.

Dear cjswift:  The type of biopsy recommended is likely based upon the imaging that detected the abnormality.  Microcalcifications may or may not show up on ultrasound.  You should discuss your fears with the surgeon and see if you could be given something to calm you prior to the procedure or if ultrasound would be an option in your situation.  An alternative is to seek a second opinion from another surgeon to investigate these issues.

The wire localization would not be as uncomfortable as the core biopsy. A very small needle is used and the wire is also very fine .... it is passed thru the needle. Some local anesthesia would of course be used at the surface. By the "wait and see" approach you speak of you mean that you would not have the biopsy you are being VERY foolish indeed. The possibility of breast cancer is nothing to wait and see about. I'm certain that you must have had blood drawn and injections before ... please don't let the fear of a needle keep you from taking care of your health and life.
