Is a biopsy necessary?

Is a biopsy necessary?

I'm 38 years old and have had saline implants for eight years. I found a small pea sized lump in my right breast two months ago. I saw my obgyn who set me up with mammogram which turned out normal. The breast center, which I had my mammogram, had me follow up with an ultrasound which showed I had dialated ducts. They reffered me to a surgeon who had me schedule an MRI, which turned out normal. Now the surgeon wants me to have a biopsy to test and remove the lump. I'm just wondering if this is necessary if all of the other tests seemed to turn out ok?

Hi there.

I understand your concern.  All the tests that turned out normal are all reassuring that everything is indeed normal.  However, depending on how your doctor assessed the nodule, he or she may not be totally convinced that the lesion is normal not unless you undergo a biopsy.  Also, saline implants may cause some form of distortion on the MRI and therefore the results may not be that accurate.  I suggest you discuss the biopsy procedure with your doctor to know the benefit and risks of such procedure.  I hope you everything will be OK.  Regards and God bless...
