As Japdip rightly said, the radiologist could have determined that the lump was a either a cyst or fibroadenoma. If that is the case ,then a 6 months follow up is not unusual.Take care.
Hi, experienced radiologist usually have a hunch of what a lumps could be when they look at mammograms. You don't say if you also had an Ultrasound .If I were you I would try to have a second opinion, since you say that breast cancer runs in your family and you worry having to wait 6 months to be tested again. The pain you are feeling right now,I believe it's because of the mammogram test and not because the mass is cancerous. You are not over reacting for wanting to do more tests and if your doctor refuses to do it,then you can ask for another opinion.Even if radiologists feel that a lump is of benign nature,(and you don't feel comfortable with his answer) he certainly cannot be 100% sure without a biopsy. So it's up to you,you can ask for more testing or wait for next 6 months.Personally I would choose for more testing.Best wishes.
As a rule when a mass of any kind is discovered on Mammogram there is some recommendation for follow-up .... I think you should contact your Dr. and ask for a detailed explanation of the Mammogram report as this would help to ease you mind. It's very possible that the mass was determined to be a cyst or Fibroadenoma; both of which are benign findings. Since the re-check was recommended in 6 months I suspect one of those two was what was found. This would also account for the pain you are experiencing now following your mammogram as both can be painful. I'm not sure what other tests your Dr. might order unless an Ultrasound would offer some additional insight. I do think you may be over-reacting but if you have no confidence in your health care providers then seek a second opinion and have your films read by another Radiologist and see another Physician for a clinical breast exam. Regards ....
