Is there a relation between armpit pain and fibroadenomas?

by MaggieMomof2, Aug 08, 2008 12:47PM
I am a 24 year old mother of 2.  A few months ago I was experiencing pains (pins and needles) in my armpits.  There were no lumps present in my armpit.  The pain persisted and at an at home exam, I found a large, painful lump in my left breast.  It was diagnosed by ultrasound as a fibroadenoma.  I am quite concerned because it has shown up, in what seems like overnight.  In the reasearch I have done, mine is larger than average (4 cm) and it is becoming more painful and tender.  My doctor does not seem as concerned as I am.  What are the next steps I should take?  (Mamogram (mammogram), biopsy, surgery???) Please let me know my options,   Thank You,  Maggie

This discussion is related to Armpit pain, could it be from fibroadenoma?.

Hi Maggie.
Any mass or lump in the breast can cause breast pain as it impinges on the normal breast structure.  A breast ultrasound can differentiate between a cystic and a solid mass.  Since the lump on your breast has increased in size with associated tenderness, further examinations may be needed.  You need to go back to your doctor or a breast specialist.  You can have a needle biopsy done and the specimen is sent for histopathological evaluation.  Surgery will follow depending on the result of biopsy.
Good luck.

Thank you for your response.  I appreciate that you explained things so well.  I will be sure to follow up with your advice of a biopsy.
                              Thanks again,
