Large painless lump

Large painless lump

A little over two months ago I found a lump above the nipple on my right breast. The lump is about two inches across the top of the breast and just under an inch in width. The lump is painless and I have had no nipple discharge. About 10 days after finding the lump, I met with my doctor who then sent me for a diagnostic mammogram and an ultrasound. Neither showed anything, and the US tech said that it was probably thickening of the tissue and don't worry about it. I was very relieved. My doctor requested that I return in three months, which will be latter part of June and I have not worried about it until the last week or so. The lump has not increased or decreased in size, there were no changes during menstration and there is still no pain. I guess I just figured that before the three months it would be gone. Several years ago I had a small pea size cyst on the same breast (the only problem I have ever had with my breast), my doctor said it was fibroid and after a couple of weeks it went away. I have read about people finding small lumps in different places on the breast; but, not larger ones on the top of the breast and the longer I wait the more worried I get. By the way I am 39 years old with no family history of breast cancer. How worried should I be?

Easier said than done when I say try not to worry.  Anytime there are changes in our body we tend to worry.  I have spent the past 2 weeks on an emotional rollercoaster.  I had 2 biopsies including a lumpectomy both benign.  I would get a second oppinion just to elleviate the stress of guessing.

It would be quite unusual for a lump to disappear completely .... often cysts will reduce in size in conjunction with hormone levels. I would try not to worry and keep that 3 month appointment. No doubt your Dr. will get some repeat imaging at that time to further evaluate this lump.    Regards ....
