Liklihood of Recurrence

Liklihood of Recurrence

Hi, last year at the age of 39, I was diagnosed with bc.  I have no family history of bc (long history of many other cancers), and am very thankful that it was caught early.  I had one 2.8 cm mass in the ducts with micro invastion.  This was ER-/PR-.  I don't know the HER2 status because I was told that they do not test for HER2 while the cancer is still in the ducts.  I had a second tumor that was 1.1 cm, 90%ER+, 95% PR+, and HER2+.  My onc, whom I like very well, doesn't tell me about specific things unless I bring them up.  I found out from my surgical onc that my situation was rare because the two tumors were side by side, even sharing the same wall, but of completely different make ups.  She informed me that the hospital's oncology review board had reviewed my case to make sure everyone was in agreement with my treatment.  When I talked to my oncologist about this, she was very limited on what she would tell me.  I've also asked her about statistics related to recurrences, and she is reluctant to focus on statistics, but says my chances are very good.   I am a "glass half full" type of person, so I don't dwell on whether I am going to have a recurrence, but I would like to know the statitistics, realizing they are just that.  I am one that does much better knowing the situation than to leave me guessing.  Also, I would like to know why there isn't HER2 status checks when cancer cells are in the ducts.  Lastly, my oncologist is scheduling a pet scan for me in a month.  While I love that this is being done, I couldn't get a clear answer as to why other than she said she thought it was prudent.  I saw my surgical oncologist shortly after and asked her if this was routine for a stage 1 bc, and she said no, but didn't elaborate.  I know my oncologist doesn't run tumor markers, so it could truly be just a check, which again, I am grateful for, but am wondering could something in my blood work have caused her concern?   Thank you so much for your help!!

Dear Hayleypc:  You need to have a conversation with your oncologist and if you cannot communicate, consider getting another oncology opinion.  We cannot answer your questions because we do not have all the information and cannot possiby speculate as to what your oncologist is thinking.  Please call your oncologist and ask for a meeting to answer questions.

Thank you, I do understand your position.  I have tried asking her, but didn't get answers to my satisfaction, so I will plan a specific meeting to discuss this with her. Could you please tell me why it is not routine to test for HER2I status in the ducts?  Is it because if you have cancer in the ducts and it hasn't migrated from the ducts, then the success rate is very high?
