Lump found on sonogram

Lump found on sonogram

An itchy, rash-like spot on my right breast prompted me to see my doctor.  I wanted to be sure I didn't have Inflammatory Breast Cancer which I understand is not detected by a mammogram.  She considered the spot was probably superficial but to ease my concern, sent me for a bilateral sonogram.  Turned out my right breast is fine but my left breast has a lump about two inches above my nipple.  My October mammogram did not detect this.  There was a hospital doctor present at my sonogram and he said to have another sonogram in 3 months to recheck it.  What should I make of this?  Should I ask to have it aspirated asap to see exactly what's going on or is it routine to watch these things?

The technician showed me the spot on the monitor - it was round, opague-like.  The size was not mentioned but considering the magnifation of the breast on the monitor, I'm guessing it's about pea size.  There is no family history of breast cancer.  I'm 47, pre-menopausal and have always had fibrous, dense breasts.

Dear dsm:  Usually a sonogram is done to determine if a mass is solid or cystic (fluid filled).  If this is fluid filled, it is more likely to be a cyst.  Aspiration is not usually done unless it is painful or bothersome.  If, on the other hand, the mass is solid, then additional testing may be required to determine its origin.  In some cases, a mammogram may be ordered to see if the mass shows up (it has been 7 months since the last exam).  The only way to truly be sure is to see a breast surgery specialist.  He/she may recommend a biopsy.  Whether or not to wait 3 months is a personal decision and would depend on your comfort level.  If you are concerned, consider another opinion.
