Lump in breast

Lump in breast

I am 32 years old and have recently found a lump in my breast.  My doctor sent me for a mammogram and ultrasound which both came back normal.  The results said "seen brightly echogenic fibroglandular appearing architecture adjacent to isoechoic adipose, no cyst or focal solid lesion identified".  The area around the lump stays very sore.  I have a strong history of cancer in my family - mother, breast cancer - father, lung cancer - aunt, breast cancer - cousin, breast and thyroid cancer.  Should I have a second opinion?  Biopsy?  Or just not worry even though the lump is still there?

Dear Trulee:  There are many reasons for lumps in the breast, many of which are benign.  Although mammography and ultrasound are not perfect tests, it sounds as though they may have identified the tissue that you may feel as a lump.  Did your doctor also do a clinical breast examination?  This fibroglandular tissue will occur in some women at certain times in their menstrual cycle and these can be very tender.  Without the ability to do a breast exam and review the mammogram and ultrasound, it is impossible to make more specific recommendations.  If you remain concerned, a second opinion with a breast specialist may help to put your mind at ease.
