Lump on a node.

Lump on a node.

I began to have breast lumps shortly after I gave birth to my second child. I don't know if this matters, but I didn't breast feed either of my kids. My paternal grandmother and all 4 of her sisters had breast cancer that all ended up in having both breasts removed and my grandma continued to battle different types of cancer throughout the rest of her life, however no one else in my family has had cancer. My doctor sent me in for  mammograms and ultrasounds following two of my regular annual visits due to more lumps. Everything came out fine at both of the sessions.  I have continued to produce more lumps and had my annual yesterday, and my doctor found what she described as a huge lump possibly on a node. When she touched it, it was very tender, but I had not noticed it before and still cannot feel it. I guess my questions are how concerned should I be this time? Anymore than the last times? How likely is it that this is the one that is actually cancer? Is there a place I can go to find out detailed statistics? I turned 34 two days ago. I live in a small town who's hospital just recently updated their equipment so my doctor said that all of these old lumps that did not show up before may show up with then new ones. My husband is already panicking and my mammo appointment is not even made yet. I am trying not to put too much thought into this for right now, but would very much appreciate any information you can give me.  Thank you.

Dear steffis:  There are many possible explanations for a tender lump.  Without more information, including examination, mammogram and/or ultrasound, etc., it is impossible for us to speculate on what this lump might be.  We suggest that you follow through with your doctors recommendations. You might also consider consultation with a breast specialist to discuss whether your family history is suggestive of a hereditary risk for breast cancer.
