Lumps under arm and in Breast

In the beginnng of October I noticed painful lumps under my arm.  I made a appointment with my doctor and when I finally got to see her (two weeks later) the pain subsided some.  She gave me a breast exam and found multiple lumps, that I did not find, and she also felt the lumps under my arm.  She then sent me for a ultrasound, which I had the next day and they found nothing.  Everything was clear.  Five days later I got my first period in three years ( I had been on the Depo Provera shot and recently discontinued it. I failed to get the scheduled shot in August).  When I went back to the doctor she felt new lumps and could not find some of the old ones.  Some are tender other not so much.  She then refered me to a breast surgeon to further evaluate and determine what to do next if anything.  I am a 24 year old mother of 2 children whom I breast fed and I don't have any idea what is going on.  I thought I had swollen glands, now I have no idea and am concerned.  What are the statistics that this could be cysts if the ultrasound found nothing.  What are the chances that this is some form of cancer, and what are the statistics of someone my age having either of these conditions.  Thank you in advance for your time.

First time to this sight, while searching for information.  Just a day ago, my teen age daughter, showed me a small lump under her left arm.  She says it's quite sore, and just noticed it when she woke up. (Sat. morning).  I will be taking her to the doctor, hopefully Mon. or Tues.  I'm not really sure if I need to have her see a MD first or if we can go right to a specialist.  I am hoping this is all just a swollen lymp node that will disappear as it came.  When she was little she had a lump below her left ear, after a few anti botics, this disappeared.  Of course, I am very concerned and wanting any information you can give me.
Thanks.

Dear Duckettgirl:  Cysts are generally fluid-filled and can be seen on ultrasound.  However, lumpiness of the breasts is very common.  In fact, it is normal for breasts to feel lumpy.  It is unlikely that this is cancer, given your age and description.  But if your doctor is recommending that you see a breast surgeon, you should follow through - even if it's for peace of mind.
