MAMMO AND ULTRASOUND RESULTS

Hi

My recent US Breast and Mammo Result done on 19/8/2010 are as follows:-

Both breast tissue is heterogeneously dense that may lower the sensitivity of mammography.

There is interval appearance of coarse calcification seen in the upper outer quadrant of the (L) breast likely represents an oil cyst. The calcification seen in the (R) breast is no longer seen. Few scattered benign punctate microcalcifications are also seen in the (L) breast.

There is no suspicious cluster of microcalcifications, suspicious mass lesion or architectural distortion seen in both breasts.

Bilateral whole breast ultrasound was done.

There are numerous hypoechoic lesions seen in the both breasts and likely represent cysts. They measure up to 1.2cm. Some of these cysts are complicated with internal echoes or septations.

There is no internal vascularity or posterior shadowing seen in these nodules. They show sonograqphically benign features.

No suspicious axillary lymph node is seen.

IMPRESSION:

There are numerous simple and complicated cysts seen bilaterally.

Palpable lumps if any, should be further managed based on clinical grounds.

I have some queries on my report:-

1) Do my dense breast make difficult for Mammography overlook any abnormal lumps due to the report stated that dense breast lower the sensitivity of mammography?

2) What is oil cysts - do these cysts cause any alarm?

3) What are complicated cysts with internal echoes or septations - do these cysts need to remove out?

4) Are there any different for complicated cysts and complex cysts?

5) The report did not rate any birads - am I at save side?

The doctor just told me everything okay just follow up with yearly check out. Should I go for second opinion?

Kindly advise.

Thank you in advance.

Hi,
Your results are good....Congratulations!
BIRADS 2 means that there is nothing to worry about, but you should have yearly check up as recommended by your Doctor.

Simple Cysts  have virtually no chance of containing malignancy. They do not need to be aspirated (unless they are causing discomfort and they do not need short-interval follow-up.
Complex cysts(same as complicated cyst) breast malignancies are extremely rare, and usually have other features, which are obviously malignant. The vast majority of complex cysts fall within the broad spectrum of fibrocystic change. For these reasons, the majority of complex breast cysts are not worrisome, and do not need to be aspirated or biopsied.
Oil cysts are benign lumps -- they are not cancerous and they don't cause breast cancer. If you are diagnosed with an oil cyst, you have some options for dealing with it. An oil cyst may be left alone, as many of these will shrink on its own. But in case your oil cyst becomes physically painful or causes you worry or distress, it can be aspirated.
I am sure that if any of the cysts in your breast was suspicious in any way,a biopsy would have been recommended.
Don't worry, you are just fine. But if you are still concerned, you could seek a second opinion and have your films reevaluated.
Best wishes.
