Male breast DCIS cancer,

My dad 77 years old ( has denentia 2 years, although not sure, contraversial ) was diagnosed DCIS in May 2007. Mystectomy done in June. No chemo. Was fine till 2 October when he started having acute back pain. CT hip and spine was done. Radiologist diagnosed secondaries in lumber spine. Another radiologist did MRI. PET scan ( normal ), bone scan and did not agree with first radiologist. He said could be some degenerative changes but not cancer. Could be multiple myeloma. Lungs did not appear clear, second radiologost said could be amyloidosis. In the meantime his CEA marker is increasing since october, was 60, then 70 and now on october 29 it was 75. His CA 27 is normal. Multiple myeloma has been ruled out on blood tests. At present  he has acute back pain. Otherwise looks normal. All MRI look non diagnostic by second radiologist. Dont know what is happening. Why CEA is high, no sign of colon, breast cancer or any other soft tissue tumor. Please advice what is happening. Where is the best place to take him. I can afford to take him anywhere. Could this back pain be due to degenerative process or is it sure it is due to secondaries. The second radiologist said the memory issue could be also due to amyloidosis. Please advice, time is running short.

Sorry to hear of your Dad's problems. I am afraid I can't answer your questions re markers, as I have never had these done for my idc. I would go to a specialist academy based hospital such as MD Anderson in Houston, Mayo Clinic in Minneapolis or the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio, all of whom have research depts and world class physicians and surgeons. As he had DCIS it could be that the cancer has spread to his spine, but I would have thought this unlikely as his bc had not spread outside of the ducts. I hope you get a definitive diagnosis soon, and proper treatment.
Liz.
