Mammo and US result

Recently rec'd US and Mammo due to lump in left breast.  US results read Normal appearing fibroglandular band contain small cysts and ducts at the site of palpable mass.  Clinical and/or mammographic consideration should dictate further management of still suspicious findings.  Mixed parenchymal patter.  Area of scarring from previous surgery adjacent to the suspect fibrodlandular pseudotumor.  Beneath the area of palpable mass is a 2.5 cm band of fibroglandular tissue containing at lease on sub .5 cm cysts and normal appearing ductal/periductal tissue.  No evidence of solid mass or architectural distortion.  I would suggest that clinical and or mammographic considerations dictate the management of still suspicious findings.

Mammo found asymetric density at the 12 o'clock position in the right breast 9 cm from the nipple.  Coned compression view are recommended for further evaluation.  Ultrasound should also be scheduled and performed if necessar.

No evidence of suspiciousl abnormaility in the upper outer quad of the left breast which would correspond to the area of papable nodularity.

I'm 34 and obviously pretty scared - what does all this mean?  I have additional tests scheduled for tomorrow.

You might want to do the same post under "Questions" if you want a medical opinion. Otherwise you'll just get our unexpert opinions. It seems these tests leave us with more questions than they answer. They only allow 2 questions per day but I found it easier to get my question posted on the weekend.

Calcium deposits are common in all women and in 4 out of 5 cases they are nothing.  Many biopsies are done because of clusters of calcium deposits.  I can't answer if you are at higher risk.  Keep your mammograms appts regular and watch for any changes and new deposit will be watched but I assume your chances of it being benign are still 4 of 5.  Women in general have a 1 in 7 or 1 in 8 (can't remember which stat is it for sure) chance of getting BC so the risk is there for everyone.  Good luck and take care.

I would think that the ultrasound would have better results than the mammogram so you are probably in the clear.  Usually they wait to order an ultrasound until after the mammogram gives them an idea.  Since you already have the ultrasound back and they didn't suggest a biopsy you probably won't learn anything new from the mammo test results.  Just keep your appointments regular as they suggest and keep an eye on it yourself for any changes.

I'm 32. I recently underwent thyroid cancer treatment (papillary carcenoma; Aug 2005-Oct 2005). It was in the very early stages and had not spread. I'm supposed to be 100% cancer free.

In June 2006 I found a lump in my right breast. I had a mammogram and an ultrasound. Mammogram said: Imaging of the right breast demonstrates a poorly defined 3cm mass w/in the upper outer quadrant of the right breast. This mass contains several calcifications within it. On magnification views, these calcifications vary somewhat in size, shape and density. No branching calcifications are detected.

Ultrasound of the right breast confirms a compex vascular mass at the 9-10 o'clock position corresponding to the mamographic abnormality. This mass measures approximately 31 x 20 x 12 mm. In certain sections, the borders of this mass are irregular and poorly defined. Although it is possible that this could represent an atypical fibroadenoma, overall imaging characteristics remain suspicious for malignancy and biopsy is suggested (BIRADS CATEGORY 5)

I had a core biopsy performed and the results came back as benign.

August 15th I had a follow up mammogram and ultrasound. The mammogram read: CC and MLO views of the right breast demonstrate tiny microcalcifications in a relative cluster in the upper outer quadrant of the right breast. In the center of this group is a biopsy localization marker, which has been placed since previous study  of June 2006.

CONCLUSION: Residual benign appearing microcalcifications in the upper outer quadrant of the right breast. Localization marker in this region, performed since 6/28/06.

Ultrasonography of the right breast demonstrates a complex heterogeneous soft tissue area in the lateral portion of the breast measuring approximately 12 x 18 , 27 mm in size, containing numerous tiny punctuate calcifications. This are of tissue has been biopsied in the interval since prior mammogram of June 2006.

CONCLUSION: Stable finding since June 2006 of a focal area of abnormal breast parenchyma measuring approximately 12 x 18 x 27 mm in size and containing numerous punctate microcalcifications. This tissue has been biopsied in the interval since June 2006.

FINAL ASSESSMENT: Benign (BIRARDS Category 2)

QUESTION:  I'm concerned because of my thyroid cancer history. My endocrinologist was suscipious of my thyroid due to "calcium deposits". Now, I know I have calcium deposits in my breast along with a lump that has been biopsied and is benign. Can this develop into cancer? Am I at a higher risk?

Thanks,LJ

You may want to find a breast surgeon/specialist to help you interpret and understand the test results.  Someone with years of experience in one area of the body will prove to ease you mind better.  If they say not to worry than you can ask why and they should ease your mind better.  Good luck.  2nd and 3rd opinions are always a plus when dealing with illnesses that could be significant.

I went yesterday and I don't feel much better after speaking to the radiologist.  Yesterday was the mammo and ultrasound of the left breast.  The radiologist came in and said he wasn't convinced that it was just dense breast tissue.  So I;m still waiting.

Well the utra sound results are in - they state initial imaging appears to demonstrate an area of relative hypogenicity in the 1:00 position of the right breast priximal 9 cm from the nipple.  This ,easured approximately 8 mm in size.  However, on further interrogation, and appears that this area actually represents normal breast fat.  There otherwise no suspicious sonographic lesions identified.  No definite mass lession is seen, but a followup mammogram in 6 months could be performed to ensure stability of this region.  No mammohram results yet, i pick up the films on 8/24.  Scheduled to see breast surgeon on 9/1 for the pseudo tumor in the left breast.  Any thoughts or ideas?

Let us know the results of your new tests. It's always scary to get reports like that from the radiologist, but I've found when I meet with my surgeon he puts it in perspective, answers all my questions and makes me feel a bit more at ease.

Please be aware that you will find many postings by an individual, dated 8/21, under many different topics and she is only pedding her wares to make money off our illness.  I am so very angry!!!!!!!!!   I have tried to post a new question to warn everyone but the site is down at the moment for new questions.  I have tried to find a way to see how these are monitored or alert someone official but no luck.   I will try again later today to see if I can post anything or alert anyone; please just be careful, especially all you newly diagnosed gals!!!!!!!

Dear worriedinphilly:  Essentially, what the radiologist is saying regarding the ultrasound is that there is no distinct abnormality that warrants specific action based solely on the ultrasound.  He is saying that the results of the mammogram and clinical breast examination (if suspicious) should dictate the recommendations for pursuing the lump further or not.  Hopefully, the results of tomorrow's tests will shed some light on the situation.
