My doctor has found a "well-defined opacity" in one of my breasts, and has ordered a spot-compression and an ultrasound.  What does that mean?

Dear MartyH:  It is not uncommon for a mammogram to find an abnormality.  In these cases, a spot compression and possibly ultrasound may be ordered to further clarify the abnormality.  Often, the abnormality may be tissue that has folded over on itself and will clear with compression.  If not, then additional investigation will be needed.
