With the use of the word intermediate I would guess your BIRADS score was a 4 which does require a biopsy. When a biopsy is recommended it's always wise to have it done as soon as possible. The use of the word STAT is done to get you on the schedule soon rather than as an elective which might be a few weeks wait. Regards ...
Hi!
What was your BIRADS score on mammogram? Given the fact that your doctor wants a STAT biopsy, it is probably 5, meaning highly suspicious for malignancy and a biopsy is recommended. STAT is just one way of getting things scheduled sooner rather than later, but does not definitely mean you have a cancer. Only the biopsy results will be able to determine that.
Follow the recommendation of your doctor and get the biopsy done -- it is not a major procedure and for a needle biopsy, is done under local anesthesia with ultrasound guidance. The radiologist could provide additional information for you regarding this procedure and you should address all your concerns prior to having the biopsy done.
Good luck and keep positive thoughts -- my thoughts will be with you. Keep us posted on your progress!
