Mammogram

In 1991, I had a breast reduction which amounted to 7 pounds removed from each breast.  I recently had a mammogram and my results are indicating there is a need to have a diagnostic mammogram done.  In 2004 I had a mammogram which showed scar tissue from the reconstruction I had done in 1991.  I strongly believe that this mammogram is a repeat of showing the scar tissue.  I am angry to be asked to do further testing because of scar tissue.  There has never been and is not any Breast cancer history in my family.  How wasteful of monies and time to go through this extensive, in my opinion,  for scar tissue.  Have you ever heard of such a request over scar tissue?  I am in my 60's.

Dear skepticme, It is not unusual for a person to be asked to return for a more precise mammogram after a screening mammogram if there are any areas that may be of concern.  In general when a mammogram is read it is compared to the results of prior mammograms, which would help in the interpretation as to whether something seen in the current mammogram that had been evaluated and documented previously and is now unchanged.  It is unclear if that was the case in this situation.   If your prior films were not available to the radiologist you may want to make sure that they are so they can be compared.

When a mammogram is done and read by the Radiologist it is always compared with the previous films. If you have been requested to return for a more comprehensive exam you should go. Evidently something was seen that was not evident on the previous films and needs to be examined more closely. Not having any family history of breast cancer has no bearing on one's developing it themselves. I had NO family history but I did have breast cancer ..... This is good medical practice ... not a waste of time and money. Of course you can refuse any and all medical treatment or testing if you wish but in my opinion it's a foolish choice. Incidently, mammograms are recommended yearly after age 40.
