Margins

Hello,

Last year I had a partial mastectomy. The tumor was a 2.5cm idc  with 6 involved nodes.Prior to the operation the surgeon has said that a further surgery may be required if clean margins were not obtained.Post operation he confirmed no further surgery would be required. I understood that to mean that clean margins had been obtained.

However recently I received my pathology report and it states that the tumor was present at the deep margin although at least 2cm from the other margins.Could you explain why further surgery was not done.

I am aware my prognosis is extremely poor as I also have marked lymphvascular invasion and the nodes were matted together. Also er-pr-.

Given all these poor prognostic factors could the reason the surgeon did not go back to obtain clear margins be because it would not increase my survival chances since it would only be a matter of time before I progress to stage 4 anyway.

I would very much appreciate your candid opinion on this.

Many thanks for your help, Regards Maggie
