Mastectomy

My 38 year old mentally retarded sister recently had lumps containing cancer cells removed from both breast. Though the Dr said no cancer cells were found in the breast tissue or lymph nodes nor is there a history of breast cancer in our family, he is recommending a mastectomy.  I think that is too radical and not warrented given her situation.  What do you think?

Dear KP, I'm not sure what you mean in terms of your sister having cancer cells removed from both breasts, and then no cancer cells found in the breast tissue.  What I am thinking is that the lumps were removed and there was an area of clear breast tissue surrounding the cancer.  Based on the size of the cancer and other features the surgeon recommends whether or not additional treatment might be necessary.  One option might be to do the mastectomy, and that tissue is examined to see if there was any microscopic cancer found.  Another option might be radiation therapy to the remaining breast tissue, to minimize or prevent the growth of microscopic deposits of tumor.  However, I do not have all the information regarding what was actually seen in the biopsy to be sure that either of these options are appropriate in your sister's situation.  You might consider a second opinion for your sister, to make sure that you are understanding all of the risks and benefits of whatever treatment is decided upon.
