Measuring of tumor

Measuring of tumor

My pathology report showed an invasive ductal carcinoma 0.7cm.  There was also some DCIS present in surrounding tissue from the mastectomy, but no other invasive cancer.  Which tumor measurement is used, the invasive or the invasive combined with the DCIS?  I am getting conflicting opinions on this from 2 different oncologists.  I want to be able to make the right decision regarding treatment, and it is stemming on tumor size.

Dear medical1:  In general, the invasive tumor is used to determine post operative treatment.  The issue is this.  There is research that tells us that chemotherapy should be given for tumors 1cm or over.  We have little to no data to tell us what to do with tumors that are less than one cm.  It is not surprising that you would get different opinions regarding what to measure.  These two things should not be considered in complete isolation.  One doctor may be considering only the invasive component and another may be erring on the side of conservative safety and suggesting therapy.  Neither is necessarily wrong.
