Dear Gailann, Metaplastic spindle cell carcinoma is a type of breast cancer. There are no clinical symptoms that would distinguish this type of breast cancer from other types of breast cancer, it is only through evaluation of a tissue sample (biopsy) that this diagnosis would be made.
Regarding your post from 2/26/04, our reply would remain the same. I'll copy it here again for you:
Dear Gailann: The skin thickening you describe does not have any characteristics consistent with
malignancyHyperpigmentation w/malignancy
Malignancy. The other incidental findings did not appear concerning either. Thus, they have given a BIRADS 3 rating to the mammogram. So that you know, the BIRADS scoring system is used to categorize mammographic findings and recommend follow up. The following is the BIRADS scoring system 1-Negative 2-Benign finding 3-Probably
benignBenign ear cyst or tumor
Benign positional vertigo finding - short interval follow-up 4-Suspicious abnormality - biopsy recommended 5-Highly suspicious of
malignancyHyperpigmentation w/malignancy
Malignancy. So, in your case, the finding is probably
benignBenign ear cyst or tumor
Benign positional vertigo - it has no overt characteristics consistent with malignancy. A second opinion may be very helpful to you - if for no other reason than peace of mind. You might consider a breast specialist who might be better able to ease your mind and could perform any procedures if deemed necessary (even if the purpose is solely to ease your mind).
