Metastatic bone cancer from breast : Prognosis

by ursani, Sep 26, 2004 12:00AM
My Mother  is 67 year old ; had her radical mastectomy in 2000. Her current clinical history is given as: Indication: K/C of cancer breast   => 2000; ;  Therapy: No Radiotherapy,  Followed only Chemotherapy with  6 x CMF q-3-4/52 from Feb to April  2001;;Follow up tests:  Bone Scan  2003, found negative;; After one year, Bone Scan 2004, found positive for metastases (Report attached);;Medications: Nolvadex 10g 1+1 Since 2000.
Bone Scan Report: Scintigraphy reveals foci of abnormally increased radiotracer uptake involving:   Skull,     Vertebrae (dorsal & upper lumbar),   Pelvis (left ipelvis),     Right knee joint (?Arthritis) ; Note: In comparison to previous skeletal scintigraphy, the disease is in progressive stage. Conclusion:  Skeletal Scintigraphy is suggestive of multi-focal bone pathology (metastatic bone disease). Advice:  Follow-up skeletal scintigraphy after 3 months.
I am making arragments to send my  mom to UK for the treatment. I live in Canada and want to bring her over here to live with me for rest of her life. Would you pls let me know that what are the best options for her treatment? will the metastases be controllable and at this stage what is her prognosis and survival rates?
I thank you very much and appreciate any help you can provide me in this regard.

Dear Ursani:  Bone metastases are difficult to predict.  There are medications to attempt to slow the progression and relieve pain (aredia and zometa in US - bisphosphonates is the class of drug) and radiation can help with severe pain.  At this point, the nolvadex might likely be stopped.  One could consider chemotherapy or additional hormone therapy such as an aromatase inhibitor.  It all depends on if there is any additional disease and her medical condition.  People with breast cancer can live for years, regardless of extent of disease.  So it is impossible to give any sort of meaningful prognosis.
