Microcalcifications and dense breasts (#3)

by Jukijudy, Jan 07, 2009 01:05PM
I am waiting for the breast biopsy to be preformed (1/15), but I'm wondering how do dense breasts (#3) and microcalcifications interplay.  By-the-way, I'm 52 and postmenopausal.  Thank You.  Judy

There is no relation between dense breasts and microcalcifications except for the fact that imaging is more difficult when the breast tissue is very dense. Microcalcifications are in and of themselves not cancerous but when observed in groups or clusters they indicate that the breast tissue is reacting to some abnormality within the breast. This can be due to either a benign or malignant condition. A biopsy of some type is always needed to determine the cause.  Regards ..
