Microcalcifications in Left Breast

I have been going for follow up mamograms and ulstrasounds on my left breast every six months for over two years. At each appointment, it is discovered that the calcifications in my left breast continue to increase and there is one area of concern that is always circled on my films.  I now have an appointment for a surgicial consultation as a 2nd set of hands, eyes and opinion.

What can I expect and if this doctor is not worried, should I be?

The surgeon will review your films and radiology reports. If there is an area of concern he / she will no doubt recommend some type of biopsy. The results of this will confirm whether the area is of some concern or not. This is definitely the way to go and remember that a great number of these areas will turn out to be negative. I always advise pt.s to take someone with them to a consult ... it never hurts to have an extra pair of ears as often we don't "get it" all ourselves. Best of Luck to you.

Yesterday I had a stereotactic core biopsy for microcalcifications in my left breast.  The calcifications were clustered and tiny, and they were high in the breast close to my underarm area.  I was pretty sore afterwards, and I bled a lot on the way home, but my husband and I were eventually able to stop the bleeding with cold compresses.  I did ruin a bra and a sweater, however, so dress in old clothes in case this happens to you! I am bruised pretty badly, but I don't feel as sore as I did yesterday, so I know I am improving despite the big black bruises!   I asked a lot of questions during the procedure and got a lot of answers, so make sure you do that, too.  It helps to be informed.  Also, if you have an athletic, jogging, exercise bra or top, wear it.  It offers great support and your breast may be too swollen to fit in your regular bras- mine sure is!

Dear stubbs44,  The surgeon will review the films and will give opinion on whether or not further evaluation including biopsy of the area of concern is recommended at this time.  If biopsy is recommended they will discuss the type of biopsy that will be best suited to your situation.

Thank you for your comments.  I am going to this consultation alone but will take my husband or someone in the future.  Hopefully there won't be any future appointments other than continued regular checks ups.  However, I have been with friends that have had biopseys and it wasn't pleasant.  It was not painless as some people say and I don't have any tolerance for pain any more.  I don't know why this is as I used to have a pretty good pain threshold.  I know it is silly to worry about the pain of a "possible biopsy".  It is even sillier of me to even be discussing this as many women have endured so much more.

Kindly,

Stubbs44
