Microcalcs

Microcalcs

I had a baseline mammo done on a Monday that resulted in me going back for a spot mag on Wednesday on the L breast. The report reads as follows:

The faint calcifications identified posteriorly in the left breast do persist with spot compression. These calcifications are very powdery in appearance and are grouped rather and tightly clustered (This is what it actually saysin the report... sounds like something is missing).

Again noted is a surgical clip in the left breast. (I had microcalcs 5 years ago removed by core biopsy- benign).

There is no focal mass or area of architectural distortion on today's view.

The area of calcifications do not appear to layer out as milk of calcium. I have marked these on the left magnification mediolateral view. Needle localization and biopsy is recommended. On one of these magnification views there is suggestion of nodularity in the left breast but this does not persist as such with spot compression dedicated to the area of nodularity.

BI-RAD 4.

I am not really TOO concerned since I had them 5 years ago and everything was fine, but I wonder if the descriptive details that the radiologist has given might indicate something more "sinister" lurking. For instance... powdery in appearance, tightly clustered, grouped ?, do not appear to layer out as milk of calcium... etc. Ha sanyone else heard these phrases? And, if so, what was your outcome? I know that 85% are benign, and as I said I am really not very worried, but hadn;t heard these phrases before, either, and not sure what they mean. Thanks for any responses, in advance.

Dear amybeth4,  BIRADS  4 rating of an ultrasound or mammogram describes a suspicious looking abnormality that is not characteristic but has a reasonable probability of malignancy, and a biopsy should be considered.   I have not heard the terms "powdery in appearance", or "layer out as milk of calcium" either so cannot comment on their significance.
