My mom told me she has been having increasingly severe breast and chest wall pain on her right side, and now it is increasing on her left. She had a free mammogram a week and a half ago and they found multiple lumps in her breasts and have referred her for a bilateral screen (not sure what kind).
She had a complete hysterectomy at age 25 and is in her early 50s now. She has never been on HRT and is a smoker. She's had multiple abortions and has never breastfed.
I'm seeing online that most benign lumps are cycle related and I'm just wondering how likely it is that these are benign. Also, what is the next step of testing for her, most likely?
I am sorry that your post hasn't been answered yet...but I'll try my best to explain a few things and I hope that it will help a little.
First of all, breast pain is not a common symptom of breast cancer particularly when both breast are involved. There are many causes for breast tenderness and pain, also called mastalgia ,and as in your mom's case it may not be cyclical, since she had a hysterectomy, but may follow a non cyclic pattern.
Non cyclic pain is most common in women 30 to 50 years of age. It may occur in both breasts or in one breast only.It is often described as a sharp, stubbing pain. Occasionally, non cyclic pain may be caused by "fibroadenomas" or "cysts".(Both benign findings) It can also be caused by changes in her hormone levels or changes in the medicines you mom is perhaps taking.Stress can also affect breast pain.If the cause of non cyclic pain can be identified, treating the cause may relieve the pain.
I can only guess what these lumps could be (cysts or fibroadenomas), but your mom will surely need additional tests to find out the true nature of these lumps.Do you know what is her BI-RADS score stated on her mammogram?
BI-RADS are standardized numerical codes typically assigned by a radiologist after interpreting a mammogram and knowing the score it will give your mom an idea on how suspicious these lumps are.
Please tell your mom to avoid caffeine (coffee, chocolate, colas).Eliminating caffeine can help to reduce the pain.
I hope that the additional tests recommended by her doctor will show benign conditions.
Best wishes to both of you...
