My mom

My mom

My mom originally had breast cancer in 2001.  She had a mastectomy with no recommended chemo or radiation, due to negative nodes and other testing.  She was re-diagnosed, first noted by tumor markers in blood work, 2 months ago. With further testing it has been found that her cancer is in both sections of her liver and in 3 areas of bone (sternum, iliac, and C2 Vertebrae).  Her recommended treatment is fasladex and zometa.
My question is what is the average life expectancy for a patient with this diagnosis.  Her doctor has not offered his opinion and I do not want to ask in front of her if she doesn't ask herself.  Thank you for your time.

Dear arnetta, The prognosis (life expectancy ) of a person with stage 4 breast cancer depends on many factors, including a person’s general health, extent of disease, response to treatment etc.  With so many factors influencing a person’s prognosis, it is impossible to predict.  A person even with advanced disease can live for many years.  However, the person who would best be able to discuss this in regard to your mother is her oncologist who has access to all of the information about her health situation.
