NSAIDS for prevention of breast cancer

I am a breast cancer survivor of 2 years, DCIS, clean nodes, no chemo or radiation, just Tamoxifen.  The hot flashes became unbearable, couldn't tolerate Effexor, so started Neurontin.  The grogginess I experience at 300mg qd taken at hs makes my days very difficult to start, and being an RN, that starts early. (Almost forgot, I had a mastectomy, and my mom also had breast cancer with some positive nodes, she did chemo and Tamox)  Have you heard of the study by Dr. Randall Harris from Ohio St Univ analyzing data from the WHI regarding NSAIDS for prevention of br ca in postmenopausal women?  Out of 81,000 participants, approx 1,400 developed breast cancer.  These women were taking 200mg ibuprophen 2-3x/wk, and some had hi risk like me.  The ones taking Motrin vs ASA had a 49% reduction in risk, the same as Tamoxifen.  I am intrigued! (And really wanting to quit the Tamoxifen ... my risk of recurrence is actually pretty low)  Comments?

Dear frankenboob:  I believe that this research was done strictly in people without breast cancer looking to see what the incidence was.  It was not done for people who have already had breast cancer (which changes one's risk).  There are trials that look to examine prevention of breast cancer in woman who have had breast cancer (perillyl alcohol) but I don't know that quiting tamoxifen is part of the trial.

I have attached the information from Dr. Harris' study if you are interested in how this could apply to your situation.  To learn more about clinical trials involving NSAIDs for cancer prevention, call the Division of Cancer Prevention and Control at The Comprehensive Cancer Center - Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Research Institute at Ohio State University at 614-293-4600.

as far as I know the study was not what's called a prospective double-blind study (meaning women would be given one or the other with neither the women nor the researchers knowing which is which, and following them along). Studies in rats showed an effect. It's very possible it works in humans: it's known that it does for colon cancer. But there isn't yet well-agreed-upon data in humans for breast cancer. There is for tamoxifen.
