Needle Biopsy

Needle Biopsy

I am a 39 year old mother of three.  I am a single mother who just recently went for a screening mammogram.  I do not know my family medical history so I felt it was time to go for this mammogram.  Unfortunately, I got a call from my physician's office stating that there was assymetry-nodules in right breast that were not present in left.  I went back for a compression view and an ultrasound.  The radiologist said that there was a small area that looked to be part solid, part fluid and that he was recommending a needle biopsy.  He said that it did not look "extremely threatening" but that we needed take precautionary steps and therefore the needle biopsy was scheduled.  I am just scared to death and just really want to be reassured that this will all be o.k.  My physician said that it was small and not to worry that it would all be taken care of.  Any opinions to reassure me in any way would be greatly appreciated.

Dear Ydebbie3:  It is not uncommon for abnormalities to be discovered on mammography.  Since they are unable to determine radiographically what this is "for sure," it makes sense to proceed with evaluating further.  In many cases, these types of things turn out to be benign.

Thank you for your prompt response.  The waiting to hear is the hardest part of all of this.  My thoughts and prayers go out to all who are in similar situations.
