Dear Patty: A needle localization wire insertion biopsy involves using either a mammography machine or ultrasound to identify the abnormality. The doctor then numbs the outer tissue of the breast and inserts a very small needle into the correct location. A wire is then guided into that location and left. The patient then goes to surgery and the area around the wire is removed. The breast is stitched up and the patient goes home. Most women tolerate the procedure with minor discomfort.
Thank you for the response. I don't have a problem with needles, I think it is more the unknown that scares me. Irregardless, I am having it done on Wed, Nov 5th. I have a very competent doctor and radiologist working together to figure out what they are seeing on the ultrasound and take it out. My needle loc is at 0900 and the surgery follows at 1000. I figure I should be home for lunch...Patty
