New microcalifications in scar tissue

New microcalifications in scar tissue

Hello.

I am a 5 year breast cancer survivor. I wanted to know why microcalifications appeared in my mammogram, specifically located around my scar in the upper quadrant of my left breast. I had a lumpectomy done previously. The results say that the microcalifications have slightly increased in number and changed in morphology since my last mammogram. Is there any reason why they appeared or is it possible that my cancer has returned ?

Thanks

Dear Malfada96:  Microcalcifications are small calcium deposits found within the breast tissue - and this is normal. There are different types of microcalcifications, and based on their pattern on the mammogram it gives the radiologist clues as to their cause. For instance microcalcifications that are more scattered are probably due to a benign (non-cancerous) cause, a cluster of microcalcifications may increase concern that there may be an underlying tumor. The only way to know for certain may be to have a biopsy.
