Nipple Discharge Post-Menopause

Hello.  I am writing on behalf of my mother who is experiencing nipple discharge.  She is 64 years old and does not take any medication.  She has been experiencing spontaneous nipple discharge from one breast since December.  She went to the doctor last week and was put on an antibiotic.  They sent a sample of the discharge to the lab and it came back no growth.  Yesterday she had a diagnostic mammogram and sonogram.  Nothing was found on the mammogram other than "some congestion behind the nipple".  They told her to watch for a change in the discharge and to come back in 6 months for a follow-up.  Does anyone know what congestion behind the nipple could mean?

I would think that result would mean that there may be some congestion involving the milk ducts which might be producing this discharge. Actually breast discharge isn't all that unusual. It is good though that a sample of the fluid was sent to the Lab. The milk ducts are often involved in some process that isn't quite normal and some discharge will be produced as a result. This should be watched and the recommendations seem very reasonable. Regards .... OH, be sure that your Mother isn't stimulating the nipple area in any way ... like squeezing the breast which will only produce more discharge.
