Nipple soreness

Hi,
I am a 30-year old female having nipple soreness & I'm very concerned because my mom had Breast Cancer. I've heard that pain is not usually associated with Breast Cancer but I'm still worried about this. I breastfed my daughter for 13 months & stopped in September, 2002. I wasn't sure if the pain is still caused because of nursing for so long but I stopped almost 2 years ago so it's probably not related. This soreness started about a month ago & now when I'm laying down on that side, I am experiencing some throbbing as well. Can you please give me as much information on something like this as possible? Thanks in advance for your help.

Sincerely,
Laura

Dear Laura:  You are correct that breast pain is not commonly associated with cancer.  This could be many things, including infection, a skin irritation, or even soreness if there could have been an injury.  Since this has lasted a month, you should have it checked out by your physician.
