Overall joint and muscle pain.

by Wamsey, May 25, 2001 12:00AM
I am 46 years old.

I developed breast cancer approximately 1 year ago.  After my first surgery, in June 2000, the Doctors found lymphoma in my stomach in which I had surgery in Sept. 2000.  I finished my chemotherapy at the beginning of March 2001.  I had a session of 2 weeks on chemotherapy and then 2 weeks off.  This lastest approximately 6 months.  During this time I also had 5 weeks of radiation.

Now, I have joint and muscle pains.  I will experience pain in one part of my body one day and pain in a different location the next.  I very seldom have any days that pain is not present.

I do not eat a lot of dairy products as I am lactose intolerant.  My question is if there is something that I can take or do to control the pain I experienced?  Will taking calcium supplements be a good starting ground as Tyenol and other pain relievers do not have any effect.

Thank you,

Dear wamsey:   Some chemotherapy can cause joint and muscle pain and this would normally resolve within a year of completion if it is related to the chemo.  Since this is a breast cancer forum, we cannot discuss the specific drugs used for your lymphoma.  Are you on Tamoxifen?  Some women state that they experience joint and muscle pain while taking this drug.  In terms of calcium supplementation, it won’t hurt you to take this but I don’t know that it will provide any pain relief. Since the pain moves around, it is unlikely that there is any serious underlying cause.  However, you should probably discuss your symptoms with a physician who knows your case and all the medications you have taken.
